DFVDT introduced door to door garbage collection by identifying Rag-picker families in the village and training them to use tricycles for garbage collection at household level. A monthly sum of Rs.30 per household was charged towards garbage collection.
This strategy not only helped in maintaining cleanliness in the village but also created livelihood for the Rag-picker families. Street corner meetings, community level meetings etc., have enabled people to understand the need for cleanliness to promote a conducive environment in the village. At the household level DFVDT encouraged families to use available containers at home for garbage segregation and its disposal. Garbage containers were also distributed to households in the neighboring villages by DFVDT.
Sanitation became a high priority activity during the Swachh Bharat program of the Government. DFVDT coordinated with the District Administration and a unique strategy was adopted for construction of toilets which ensured community partnership & ownership as every family was involved in toilet construction at their premises, it resulted in 1765 toilets being constructed in 6 months period and the village being declared as the first open defecation free village in Kamareddy district. DFVDT has replicated its strategies and within the next 6 months the entire Mandal has been declared as open defecation free.
