Domakonda Fort
Domakonda Fort, until India’s independence, was the seat of the Rajas of the Kamineni family who governed the Domakonda Samasthan consisting of over a hundred villages in eighteen paraganas or subdivisions, in the present day Kamareddy district of Telangana state. Prior to Domakonda they governed the region from Ramareddy and Bhiknoor where too they had built forts. They also had forts in Banswada and Velutla, however Domakonda is the only fort still standing. The Family over the years have built temples, some dating back to over 300 years, where devotees offer prayers to this day.

The Kamineni family has a recorded lineage of 21 generations from the present descendants. The first of them was Kamineni Chowdhary who lived during late 1400 CE. His son Kacha Reddy was granted a ‘Sanad’ by Sultan Muhammad for an Estate in the Medhak territory, and established the town of Bhiknoor in 1510 CE and made it his capital. The family has had suffixes of Reddy, Chowdhary and Rao added to their names. Several villages in the region, to this day, bear the names of the members of the Kamineni family such as, Kamareddy, Yellareddy, Mallareddy, Ramareddy etc. The ‘Samasthan’ ‘Sanad’ was granted to Kami Reddy in 1645 by Abdullah Qutub Shah and after the battle in Chennuru in 1788, the Domakonda Samasthan was established in 1791 by Rajeshwara Rao during the time of Asaf Jah II. The Kamineni family governed the region during the later part of the Bahmani period, and thereafter the Qutub Shahi and Asaf Jahi periods.

Over the centuries the Kamineni family encouraged literature and other artistic pursuits. A number of books and literary works were patronized or written by them, one dating back over 350 years written by Kamineni Malla Reddy in Telugu. In more recent times in early1900’s, Rajeshwar Rao under his pen name 'Asghar', translated the Mahabharath into Urdu and Persian and also compiled dictionaries in Urdu and Persian.

In 1909 KVR Krishna Row, the Zamindar of Polawaram wrote in the book ‘‘Umapathy Abhyudayam’’ about the Kamineni family as follows: “The members of this family belong to the ancient family of Reddies who were at one time most important and powerful in Deccan and the Telangana Country. Among the members of this illustrious family, Kachareddi was celebrated for his valour, Mallareddi for his great literary attainments and authorship of the celebrated “Padmapuranam” and many works and his strong devotion to Rama; Rajeswara Row for his godliness and warriorship; Rameswara Row for his great physical strength; and his brother Someswara Row for his charity”

The Rajas of the Kamineni family were known to be collectors of jewelry and horses and they are said to have visited present day Iran, Iraq and Arabia. Their personal guards included African Siddi and Arab Chaush warriors, the descendants of some live in Domakonda to this day. There was communal harmony in their Samasthan and the Kamineni family participated in festivals of all religions.
